Hesperia recognised with Net Zero Action Award

Hesperia has been recognised for our approach to sustainability, receiving the Net Zero Action Award at the 33rd National Banksia Awards in Melbourne recently.

Driven by our Sustainability Strategy 2021-2026, Hesperia has committed to a Life-Cycle Net Zero approach on all projects and carbon neutral operations. The award also recognised our objectives around waste and resource consumption in day-to-day operations and projects.

Our commitment to sustainability is integrated within our operations and projects at all levels. Hesperia’s sustainability group supports teams to capture and deliver on opportunities within each project, ensuing alignment to the Sustainability Strategy. Each project across the business is required to incorporate a suite of sustainability outcomes, including a third-party accreditation; Net Zero Carbon Development; one hundred per cent renewable energy; EV charging solutions and construction data.

Hesperia’s Sustainability Manager Mark Taylor said the Net Zero Award is a highlight for the team and a reflection of their dedication to addressing climate change.

“Hesperia is determined to adopt an approach to our work that avoids the environmental impacts that have been associated with development and makes the most of opportunities to restore and repair previous damage when we find it,” Mark said.

“Independent recognition at the national level gives us confidence that we are on the right track and encourages us to continue.”

The judges were particularly interested in Hesperia’s leadership approach, ensuring ambitions and lessons learned are communicated transparently.

“Addressing our own environmental impacts will not be enough if the rest of our sector doesn’t join us. We see being transparent and honest about our journey as a key part of sparking change more widely,” Mark said.

“Hesperia has always been willing to commit publicly to our principles and to being transparent about what it takes to live up to them. This goes to our vision for the sites and projects that we take on, as well as to our environmental and sustainability principles.”

“Additionally, we are working on adopting a framework to guide annual reporting so that we can publish consistent, detailed information on our projects and our corporate operations,” Mark said.

As a signatory to the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, Hesperia has pledged Net Zero across our projects by 2030. Hesperia is on track to meet this target before then and has adopted a policy to ensure any necessary offsets are from fully verified sources which are good for the environment and for people.

The Banksia Awards seek to demonstrate what is possible when individuals and organisations focus on positive environmental and social outcomes, and we thank them for this recognition.
